Mitzi was a wonderful dog...loving, kind and gentle in every way. My son wasn't quite 3 years old when we got her. He knew right away, which one he wanted. As soon as he saw her, he pointed and said, "I want that wion(lion)!" LOL So despite the employee's remark that he "didn't know why she hadn't been put down because nobody wants an older dog", we took her home with us. She was only two years old...not what I'd call an "older dog" at all. We got her at the Animal Rescue League. Her previous owner's moved out of state and couldn't take her with them. We never regretted one day with her!

She was really something. She didn't like being confined to the back yard, so no matter what we did, she would find a way to sneak out, then sneak back in leading us to believe that she never left the yard. On one of these excursions though, on a cold winter day, she was struck by a hit and run driver. My son saw it happen and was devastated, especially to think that the driver didn't even stop. Mitzi made it home and we took her to the vet. He couldn't find anything wrong with her even though she had trouble walking. He said that she was probably just bruised and shaken up but the next morning, she couldn't move. She was paralyzed from the neck down. My friend and I put her on a toboggan and took her back to the vet. He took x-rays and said that her neck was broken. The only reason it didn't show up at first was because arthritis was holding the bones together. Poor Mitzi. We had to have her put down, but oh did we miss her! We still do, to this day. We've had many wonderful dogs but never one quite like her.

Mitzi

How blessed we were to have you;
If only for a while…
The best dog in the whole wide world,
To love and make us smile.

Your gentle heart was oh, so big;
Your loving, mellow ways,
filled our lives with happiness
and brightened all our days.

Then came that cold and wintry day
When you were running free;
Your life was just about to end,
We cried and let you be.

We know you're in a better place;
You freely romp and bark;
Running through God's garden now,
with butterflies and meadowlark.

We'll meet again o'er Rainbow Bridge;
We'll all be back together;
How we'll rejoice and sing our songs
Of happiness, forever!
