At the age of 23 or so, he emigrated to America in 1848. His name is also spelled as: Ohnmeis. According to the genealogy records of his grand-daughter, Margaret Jessie (Ohnmeiss) Fox, it is believed that his first wife -- whose name is thought to be Sophia Regina Von Kerker -- died shortly after arriving in America, due to shock of the death of a child born on the ship enroute to America. According to this uncorroborated tale, the child was buried at sea.

He was the husband of Christiana Mary Rahrer/Rehrer. Their children were: Daniel Henry, Emma, Sarah, Alexander, Charles E., Kathryn, Ida C., Annie Jane, and Rebecca Mary Ohnmeiss. At the age of 53, he joined the Sugar Valley Church of Brethren, Eastville, Pennsylvania on June 10, 1879.
