L. J. Mathena Buried

After several weeks of a gradual decline, until his vital organs ceased to function, Grandpa Mathena sank peacefully, easily into the eternal beyond and death claimed his weary soul Monday, February 14, 1927.

Lewis James Mathena was born July 9, 1836, in Virginia, and at the time of his death was aged 90 years, 7 months and 5 days. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Jane Spence in Virginia in 1853. To this union 9 children were born, 6 of whom survive. Two sons and one daughter live in North Dakota, one son lives in Nebraska, and one daughter lives in Kansas. None of the children were able to attend the funeral. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The deceased with his family moved from Virginia to Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1860 and in 1903 moved to Hartford Kansas, which has since been his home. His aged wife and companion died May 18, 1923. For the past eight years he has made his home with his granddaughter, Mrs. Fred Beaty, and it was under her tender care and loving administrations that his closing days were made comfortable and happy.

Funeral services were held at the Fred Beaty home Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 16th at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. W. Wright, pastor of the Christian church, and interment was made in the Hartford cemetery. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Monroe Walliser, John Walliser, Ed. Brewer, Frank Hoyt, C. A. Holforty, and Geo. Walliser.

Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mrs. Sylvia Mathena and children of Emporia.
