William Clifford Barber was born in Canton, Van Zandt County, Texas on January 24, 1923 to Robert Clifford Barber (1899-1933) and Mary Octavia Thompson Barber (1901-1971).

He had five siblings: Helen Rivers Barber Bagget, Ruby Viola Barber Sheppard, Ollie Bell Barber, Virgil LeRoy Barber and Mary Jewel Barber Hooper.

His paternal grandparents were Ollie Leon Rasberry Barber (1877-1967) and Mary Magdaline Bryan (1873-1940) and his maternal grandparents were Beall Thompson (1875-1911) and Sallie Nannie Maxwell

He was a native of Canton and moved to the Overton-London, Texas area in 1924. He belonged to London Baptist Church and attended New London High School.

He was a World War II veteran having served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. During the war he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.

He married Ethel Retha Wood on February 21, 1941. They were blessed with four children: William "Ronnie" Barber, Steven Jeffery Barber, Tony Wayne Barber and Tonia "Jane" Barber Mashburn.

He was a heavy equipment operator for a pipeline company.

He died early Monday, August 26, 1968 in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia. He was burned to death in an apartment fire. He was 45 years old.
