SAN ANGELO - James Cal Henderson passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2008, in the arms of his loving wife, Bernadene. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2008 at Belvedere Cemetery with Mike Andress from HOSA officiating. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home. Cal was born "# 7 of 8" to Nat Q. and Leta Lee Henderson of San Angelo, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Nat Q., Jr.; Jerry George; Edward "Doc" Sealy; Henry Jackson; and sister Joyce Lee Arnold. He is survived by Cecil Wade and Leta Elizabeth Calcote. Cal's family roots run deep in San Angelo. His grandfather, Jeremiah Martha Henderson was the jailer at Ben Ficklin during the flood who refused to let his prisoners drown. Jeremiah also surveyed most of the northwestern portion of Bexar county (later Tom Green and the eleven counties formed from it). Jeremiah and his wife were charter members of First Christian Church.
Cal's father and two uncles started Henderson Brothers Plumbing in 1920. He married his high school sweetheart, Bernadene Burks, in 1953. Out of this blessed union were born Mark Willis, James Michael and Evan Matthew. Mark passed away in 1998. In 1954, Uncle Sam called Cal up and he served 2 years in Korea in the 25th MP Co, 25th Div, 14th Inf, making lifelong friends. Cal and Berna made quite a few MP reunions around the country and stayed with friends along the way. After returning from Korea, Cal worked for his father as a plumber. In Nov. 1957, he went to work for San Angelo Fire Dept. and spent 32 years total, from '57 -'69 and '75 - '95. His Uncle Wade was a charter member of the department, serving with Oscar Ruffini. Cal is also survived by his wife, Bernadene; sons Mike & wife, Janet of San Angelo, Matt of Wimberley; granddaughter Venetra Ann Usery of Austin; favorite nephew & wife Craig & Jan Henderson; neices Vicki & husband Corky Lang and Rebecca Calcote; special cousins Greg and Barb Henderson of Louisville, Kentucky; as well as many other cousins, nephews and neices. He also leaves behind his two canine pals from home, Bucky and Rocky. Mom, my brother Matt and I would like to thank Hospice of San Angelo for their loving care and request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to HOSA or the SAFD Honor Guard.

"I can only imagine what it will be like, When I walk by Your side.

I can only imagine what my eyes will see, When Your Face is before me!

I can only imagine. I can only imagine.

Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel?
Will I dance for you, Jesus? Or in awe of You, be still?

Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing Hallelujah, Will I be able to speak at all?

I can only imagine! I can only imagine!"
