Captain William Oldrin (1773-1858) emigrated from England to the United States in 1794. He worked as a ship's captain at sea and was a founding member of the Suffolk County, New York Freemason lodge for seamen. (b. August 12, 1773; England - d. April 24, 1858; Rye, Westchester County, New York, USA)

Parents:
His father may be William Oldrin (1746-?), who was christened on May 23, 1746 in Ubbeston, Suffolk, England. In the will of John Oldrin (1751-1840), William is identified as John's late brother and described as "of Gedgrave". John left £19 and 19s to each of William's children when they reached the age of 21 years. Few records have been found for this William Oldrin. This may be the same William Oldrin that married Elizabeth Cage.

Birth:
He was born in England on August 12, 1773.

Sibling:
Mary Oldrin who married John Corkhill.

Migration:
He migrated to the United States in 1794. During the War of 1812 he registered as a British alien living in the United States.

Marriage:
He married Almy Kinner (1780-1853) around 1800. Her name sometimes appears as Amy Kinner. Her family lived in Brookhaven, Suffolk, New York in the 1800 and 1810 census.

Children:
William Oldrin II (1800-1805); Mary Oldrin (1813-1849); Almy Oldrin (1815-1905) who married William Henry Wood, Sr. (1815-1904); Sarah Oldrin (1816–1894) who married Abraham Kershaw (1814-1851); Elizabeth Oldrin (1818-1901) who married Augustus Lancaster Bogart (1817-1898); and Ann Seabury Oldrin (1827–1894) who married Augustus Lancaster Bogart (1817-1898) as his second wife, after the death of her sister.

Brookhaven:
From at least 1810 to 1840 he lived on the Crane Neck peninsula in Setauket-East Setauket, New York. It is between Stony Brook and Port Jefferson, where his descendants would live. It was listed on the 1850 United States census as Brookhaven, Suffolk, New York, United States.

Freemason:
He appears to have been a founding member of the Suffolk County, New York Freemason lodge which was devoted to seamen. This appeared in The Evening World of New York City on August 15, 1888: "... Samuel V. Norton and Capt. William Oldrin. The latter gentleman is the subject of an anecdote which illustrates his patriotism. He lived in Crane Neck during the troublesome times in 1812 on an eminence overlooking the pleasant spot where Hon. Frank Spinola now makes his home. One day a British sloop-of-war anchored off the Neck and flaunted her flag before the eyes of the Captain. He dragged a clumsy old cannon from his home to the bluff, and, after loading it with solid shot, turned it carefully on the menacing craft and fired. When the smoke cleared away the sailors were harrying to get up anchor and away. The shot hail disturbed their fancied security, and had severed the shrouds and brought the mainsail down about the heads of those on deck."

Death:
April 24, 1858 in Rye, Westchester County, New York. No death certificate has been found, Westchester County has selected records dating to 1847.

Funeral notice:
Funeral notice from the New York Herald on April 27, 1858: "Oldrin - Rye, Westchester county, New York on Saturday morning, April 24, Captain William Oldrin, formerly of Stonybrook, Long Island in the 85th year of his age." His death certificate was not found in Rye, New York. Death certificates started in New York State, other than New York City, in 1881.

Burial:
Caroline Churchyard, Setauket, Suffolk County, New York.

Epitaph:
"Our Father; Capt. Wm. Oldrin; Born Aug. 12, 1773; Died April 12, 1858"

Relationship:
Captain William Oldrin (1772-1858) is the fourth great-grandfather of Richard Arthur Norton (1958).

DNA:
It was originally thought that Captain William Oldrin (1772-1858) was a member of the same family as Reverend Edward Oldrin (1802-1874). Edward Oldrin' father would be from the same generation as the captian. However, "djtcsmith" of Woodbury, Connecticut is a descendant of the reverend and she does not match any of the known descendants of the captain.

Marcia Seaman, Chairperson of the Historic and Cultural Artifacts Commission wrote on May 25, 2016: "I am attaching information regarding the individuals you mentioned. It appears that they are buried in the Caroline Churchyard however, there is no location within the cemetery listed on the internment records. There are many very old gravestones in the cemetery and many have lost their identifying characteristics. I wished to reply to your inquiry without further delay to convey what I have found to this point. I will do additional searching to perhaps provide a definitive photo if location can be ascertained."

Wood abt. 1838 (he was b. 1815 in Mt Kisco, Westchester, NY). She and William d. after 1900; I'm still looking for their death certificates/burial site (last place of known residence was New Caanan, Fairfield, CT). It appears that Capt. William Oldrin is the only Oldrin male living in Brookhaven Town between 1810 - 1820, so he's promising as a potential parent (plus, her name matches William's wife's), yet I see no Almy/Amy listed as a child of his and the known daughters all seem to belong elsewhere. 1820 Census supports your research re: 4 daughters. 1840 Census shows a William Wood of the correct age with a wife and child living a short distance away from William Oldrin in Brookhaven Town. Could her father be a sibling of William's, I wonder. I plan on visiting Suffolk Co. Historical Society to dig deeper, but was wondering if you have any theories or know of any other Oldrins that might be Almy's/Amy's parents." GazetteWriter at Ancestry wrote on May 20, 2016: "I have resolved this query via a bible record transcription from 1875. Almy was their daughter, born in 1815 in Stony Brook. Capt. William Oldrin and his wife Almy are buried at Caroline Church in Setauket, Suffolk Co., NY. Almy's maiden name was Kinner."
