John is survived by his beloved sons John (Darlene) and Greg, and their mother Irene Moe Doheny Ovenden with whom he enjoyed a cherished lifelong friendship before, during and after their marriage. He also leaves behind many loving relatives, friends, colleagues and former students who benefited from his passion for teaching.
A noted published expert on the life and career of English novelist and poet Thomas Hardy, John enjoyed spending summers in London pursuing his research. He has also written about D.H. Lawrence, the Brontës, George Eliot, and Herbert Read, as well as various book reviews.
A memorial will be held for John on June 4th at UBC, and a scholarship in his name is planned.
He was greatly loved by all, and equally missed. Rest in peace now, dear John Rodney.

John Rodney Doheny, Professor Emeritus, English Department, University of British Columbia died Thursday, March 17th, 2005 of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder at Vancouver General Hospital. He was 77.
Dr. Doheny was born October 18th, 1927 in Washington State, and grew up in the town of Orting, Washington. After service in the U.S. Army he enrolled at the University of Washington under the GI Bill, eventually achieving a doctorate in English Literature. He began teaching at the University of British Columbia in 1960, retiring in 1993. His students held him in highest regard.
Dr. Doheny was a member of the Thomas Hardy Society, Dorchester UK and the D. H. Lawrence Society, Leeds UK. He wrote extensively and was widely known for his writings on Hardy. In addition he published many articles on these writers and other subjects, book reviews, book introductions and anthologies.
He was an avid basketball enthusiast. Deeply missed, he is survived by wife Irene Clair Doheny-Ovenden, son John Steven Pip Doheny and daughter-in-law Darlene Bigus-Doheny, and son James Gregory Brian Doheny; nieces Julie Braden and Jackie Olsen and cousin Catherine Engel, all of Snohomish County, Washington.
