Dana Cottrell, a man of the sea, passed away in La Mesa, CA. on January 24, 2017. His 23 year Army (SP4) & Navy (ABF1 AW) career included overseas assignments in Vietnam, other parts of Asia, Europe, Africa & the Middle East. He served on 7 different ships during his career. He loved the smell of the jet fuel and always got a charge seeing the ships clear the channel at Coronado.

Even after he retired, he still had the need to be by the sea. He spent his weekends with his wife, surfing at Coronado Beach on the Naval Base in Coronado, CA. He loved old Hollywood, old rock-n-roll, good food, good drink & good friends. He was a man of integrity, true to himself. He always left an impression on those he met.

His knowledge of the arts, movies, music, books & history was massive. He had so many favorites it is hard to pick just a few. Frank Zappa and Hunter Thompson were his favorites to quote. Hunter said: "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." This quote came out of Dana's mouth quite often.

Dana was a native of the California Bay Area. He enjoyed his retirement in La Mesa, CA. with his soul mate Stacey of 31 years.

Dana is survived by his father, David Cottrell, his brother Daniel, his sister, Soraya Scheibel, niece Aubrey & nephew Ansel Scheibel with numerous nieces & nephews from his wife's side of the family.

His mother, Sonja Cottrell passed away many years ago.

The funeral service will be held at Miramar National Cemetery on February 15, 2017 at 1:30pm.
