San Antonio Police officer Robert Deckard, a seven-year veteran, was responding to a reported robbery in progress Sunday off Mathis Road on the south side when he was met with gunfire.

A high-speed chase began as the suspects fled south on I-37 into Atascosa County. At some point, the robbery suspects shot at Deckard's vehicle and a bullet pierced the windshield. According to investigators, the officer was struck in the head before wrecking his squad car.

Deckard, 31, had served the city of San Antonio for seven years as a police officer. He was a husband and a father, loved by many. He has been praised as an excellent officer.
