Edward Thompson age 88, of Chicago, IL.

Loving son of the late Joseph Thompson and Anna (nee Holohan) Bredberg. Dear step-son of the late Edwin Bredberg and cherished grandson of the late Catherine Carry and James Holohan.

Beloved husband of 61 years of the late Ella Jane (nee Meyer). Loving father. Cherished grandfather.

Edward served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 83rd Infantry, Division 329, 1st Battalion. He was proud to have been in five major campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Was awarded a bronze Star Medal with 1 bronze oak leaf cluster with the letter "V" device for heroism, he was awarded a purple Heart with 3 bronze leaf clusters and served in the Illinois National Guard.

Edward chose to become a Chicago Firefighter in 1943 and remained with the department until 1953 when he then became a Chicago Police Officer until 1967. When he retired from the department to found the Illinois Police Federation where he remained the Executive Director for 40 years until its closure in 2007.

A celebration of Edwards life will be held on Friday, August 24 at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill Street, Naperville, IL from 4 to 7 p.m., with a memorial service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Policemen's Widows & Children Fund, 221 N. LaSalle St., # 1626, Chicago, IL 60601
