Englewood, FL, formerly of Chicago,
passed away in Muskegon, MI, March 26, 2001.

Ann joined the Chicago Police Department in 1972 and received the department's highest honor, the Award of Valor the following year. She served in law enforcement for 26 years, mainly in the Youth Div., attaining the rank of Sergeant prior to retiring in 1998.

Ann Leybourne Biebel, 53, a retired Chicago police sergeant who had earned the department's highest honor after killing a serial rapist who had abducted her in 1973, died of cancer.

Ann was an off-duty police recruit when she was kidnapped at gunpoint outside her Chicago home. She was thrown into a car and driven to a public housing complex. When her attacker stopped, Ms. Biebel took a gun from her purse and shot Robert Ellis, forcing him to drop his gun. The two struggled before she picked up Ellis's gun and shot him with it three more times, killing him.


Ann married James Biebel in Chicago, he survives her; along with one daughter, Sarah B. Erwin of Chicago; her father Douglas Leybourne; and one brother, Douglas (Sarah) Leybourne Jr. of Muskegon.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held
March 31, 2001, Saturday at
St. Mary Catholic Church,
239 W. Clay Ave.,
Muskegon, MI, with
Fr. Ernest Bernott, officiating.
Interment Laketon Township Cemetery.
Visitation:
March 30, 2001, Friday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Achterhoff Funeral Home,
1751 Peck St.
Muskegon, MI.
