Edward was a son of Mary Halford and Christopher Converse.

He immigrated from England with Governor Winthrop's Company, landing in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts on 12 June 1630.

He had married (1) prior to 1614: Jane Allen Clarke of Theckenham Hamlet, Worcestershire, England. She died in England.

He married (2) Sarah Smith Parker, 29 June 1614, of Sheffield, Essex, England and she accompanied him to America with their three children; Josiah, born 1618; James, born 1620; Mary, born 1622; their fourth, Samuel, was born in Massachusetts, 1637 and Edward Jr. in 1639.

*NOTE:
Historical researchers disagree, not only on his lineage and a possible marriage to another Sara/Sarah, but this biography is based on Woburn Town Records and burial records of Woburn, Massachusetts.

He was an early Puritan settler in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

After Sarah's death, he married (3) Johannah Warren Sprague, 9 September 1662, at Woburn.

Edward Sr. was known as "Deacon" and was the founder of the town of Woburn.

He built the first house and first mill in Woburn. He was active in town affairs, and served as one of its first selectmen. He also helped establish Charlestown and was one of the colony's wealthy landowners.

Edward founded the First Church of Charlestown, and established the first ferry from Charlestown to Boston.

He holds the title of "Forefather of The Converse Family in America".
Baptized Navestock, Essex, 23 March 1588/9, son of Allen Converse. He deposed 10 March 1661/2 aged about 73 years. Ferryman from South Weald, Essex who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1630. First settled in Charlestown; moved to Woburn MA in 1640. Died in Woburn, 10 August 1663.
Married: (1) Great Burstead, Essex, 29 June 1614 Sarah Parker; she died Woburn 14 January 1662[/3?].
(2) In 1663 Joanna (Warren) Sprague (widow of RALPH SPRAGUE {1629, Charlestown}); she died Woburn 24 February 1680 and called herself "Joannah Convers widow to Edward deceased sometimes wife of Lieutenant Ralph Sprague" in her will.
Edward Converse called Allen Converse "kinsman" and made him an overseer of his will.
SAMUEL FULLER in his 1663 will speaks of "a child committed to my charge called Sarah Converse." Since Fuller also had in his household two members of the family of RICE COLE of Charlestown, it may be that this Sarah Converse was a member of the family of Edward Converse or in some other way related.
