James D. Black, 84, of Bedford, Ky., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at Baptist Hospital North East in La Grange, Ky.

He was born July 5, 1924, in Trimble County, Ky., the son of Thomas and Frieda Chandler Black. He was employed at Jefferson Proving Grounds and was a member of Bedford Baptist Church. He was mayor of Bedford, Ky., for over 18 years and served as Bedford fire chief. He was the first EMT for Trimble County, Ky. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 158, where he recently received his 60-year pin. He enjoyed crosswords, traveling with his family, and collecting gemstones and coins. He also spent many hours playing solitaire.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice Black; one daughter, Allie Wright of Bedford, Ky.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Frieda Chandler Black Tingle; one daughter, Becky Black; and three half siblings.

The funeral was at Ransdell Funeral Home in Bedford, Ky. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Bedford, Ky.
