David Ovshtein was born and raised in Detroit's North End. He grew up with many members of the Purple Gang and did a two-year sentence in the Ionia Reformatory. Upon his release, he fell back into a life of crime and was found shot to death in an alley off of 5911 Huber Street. Ovshtein had the dubious distinction of being Detroit's 10th gang-related murder in 12 days, in the month known as "Bloody July."
