My Granddaddy was born in Fayette County, Alabama to Fred & Alma Aldridge. He dropped out of school at a very young age to help the family with the farm. He married my Grandmother, Emma, on November 22, 1941. It was during their early time together that Estle went off to war. Grandmother described it as one of the most agonizing times of her life as she counted the days until he came home to her.
In 1953, Estle & Emma left Alabama and moved to Chicago. Estle worked at Scholle for thirty years and in 1983, retired and moved back to his home in rural Alabama.
I went to visit during the summers and when I stayed the whole summer when I was ten years old, Granddaddy would always buy me a big gallon of chocolate ice cream from Piggly Wiggly! Family would joke that he looked forward to me coming over so he had an excuse to buy ice cream.
He had two other granddaughters, and he always bought each one of us a new doll for Christmas. I remember getting the Peaches and Cream Barbie the last Christmas they were here in Chicago. The first Christmas after he passed, Grandmother bought a doll for me in remembrance of the tradition.
He was a physically strong man, though I hardly noticed because he was so gentle at heart.
Working at the chemical company all those years caused him to develop a type of Leukemia, which is what ended his life.
We miss him and love him very much. Granddaddy, you are thought of everyday.
