Ray was the son of Julius "Jack" Gaddy and Dorothy Fox, and spent his teen years under the guidance of his loving stepmother, Gladys Buchanan Gaddy. He was born Raymond, but due to a clerical error when he entered the military, his legal name became Roy. He served in the 18th Air Service Squadron, US Air Force during World War II and received a purple heart. While stationed in Guatemala, he married a Guatemalan woman named Elena, but she refused to return to the US with him when his tour ended, and the marriage was dissolved. He married Ethel "Mickey" Underwood on November 10, 1945 in Chicago. They had no children. Ray was the brother of Leola, Charles, Betty, and Harold; and the step-brother of Bonnie, John, Donna, and Donald.
