A FACULTY PLAY

Delavan Teachers to Give "The Patsy" to Raise Funds for Athletic Activities

The faculty of the Delavan high school will present "The Patsy," a 3-act farce comedy on Friday night, May 3 in the auditorium there. The teachers are turning thespians to raise funds for the athletic activity fund of the school and will produce the play with the following cast:

This a clever comedy full of comical situations and dramatic incidents. The part of Patricia Harrington, a girl who "runs second" to her older sister, is played by Miss Wanda Zirkle. She is the patsy who is blamed whenever anything goes wrong, and if forced to remain in the background in order that her sister may be presented to advantage. Her father, a traveling man, is on her side, and finally declares his independence by putting Ma in her proper place. This brings about Patsy's ultimate triumph.

DELAVAN TEACHER SUES FOR DIVORCE
Suit was filed in district court this morning by Wanda Briix, a teacher at Delavan, from Robert Briix. The plaintiff in her petition alleges that the couple was married in Winfield in 1930 and are the parents of three children. The court is asked to grant a divorce on the grounds of gross neglect of duty, give custody of the children to plaintiff and allow adequate support for the minors. Hembrow & Leanord are the attorneys.

BRIIX - JILKA

Mrs. Wanda Zirkle Briix, daughter of Mrs. D. L. Zirkle, Winfield, was married to Frank. A. Jilka, son of Mrs. Annie Jilka, 1006 N. 9th, and the late Frank Jilka, Aug. 20 at her home in Herington.

The Ref. Leonard Reifel, Sedalia, Mo., received the couple's double ring vows before a wall mirror background with an arrangement of large white mums and accents of red ribbon.

The bride wore a black lace and cotton sheath with a black velvet half-hat and corsage of red carnations.

Mr. and Mrs. Milan Harkness, Delavan, were attendants. Mrs. Harkness' black sheath was worn with a black hat and a white carnation corsage.

A wedding dinner followed at The Outpost in Council Grove.

Mrs. Jilka received an AB degree from Southwestern College, Winfield, and took graduate work at Emporia State Teachers' College. She is librarian at the Herington high school.

Her husband received a BS degree from Kansas Wesleyan University and a MS degree from Emporia State. He has been principal at Neosho Rapids Rural high school the past three years. Mr. Jilka was in the army for four years in World War II, three spent in overseas duty.

After Sept. 1, they will be at home at 201 W. Walnut, Herington.

DELAVAN ALUMNI PLAN NOON MEAL AT 1995 REUNION

A changed from an evening to a noon meal, on a trial basis, is planned for the 1995 Delavan Rural High School Alumni Association Reunion. That change was approved Saturday night at this year's reunion, attended by 53 alumni and 46 guests.

It is hoped the noon meal will allow more to attend the annual event.

Officers elected for 1994-1995 were: Harold Diepenbrock, president; Olive Schoof, Vice-President; Margie Bettles, Secretary; and Vivian Wilson, treasurer.

Wanda (Zirkle) Jilka, a teacher at DRHS from 1927-1928 and 1942-1947, was at this year's reunion. She was accompanied by two daughters, Virginia Lowther and Bonnie Briix.

HERINGTON -- Wanda I. Jilka, 97, Herington, died Friday, March 7, 2003.

Mrs. Jilka was born Wanda I. Zirkle o Aug. 17, 1905 at South Haven. She was the Herington High School librarian from 1952 until retiring in 1971.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank A., in 1987.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Lowther of Emporia and Bonnie Thompson of McPherson; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Herington. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington.

Memorials may be made to the church, in care of Donahue Funeral Home, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, 57449-3038.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and 9:30 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the church. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Wanda Jilka

HERINGTON --- Wanda I. Jilka, 97, Herington, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at a Herington hospital.

Mrs. Jilka was the Herington High School librarian for Unified School District No. 487 from 1953 to 1971. She also taught private piano lessons and composed music. She was an author.

She was born Aug. 17, 1905, in South Haven to David Luther and Rettie Tedrow Zirkle. She earned a bachelor's degree from Southwestern College and a master's degree from Emporia State University.

Mrs. Jilka was a member of Herington United Methodist Church and the Martha Circle. She was the church organist for 35 years. She was a member of the Chapter FC of the PEO Sisterhood, Herington Lioness Club, Daughter of the American Revolution, DAC and the Tri-County Arts Association. She was active in the Tri-County and Kansas historical societies, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kansas Library Association and Retired Teachers Association. She was an honorary life member of the Kansas State Teachers Association.

She married Robert C. Briix on Aug. 10, 1930, in Winfield. They divorced. She married Frank A. Jilka on Aug. 20, 1958, in Herington. He died Oct. 31, 1987. Mrs. Jilka also was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Joan Lee, on May 30, 1957.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Lowther, Emporia, and Bonnie Thompson, McPherson; seven grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Herington. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington. Mrs. Jilka will lie in state at the funeral home from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday and after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Members present were Cathleen Miller, Marilyn Miller, Virginia Briix, Reta Yakle, Roselle Yakle, Dorothy Van Winkle, Beverly Van Winkle, Margaret Ann Miller, Lorraine Ann Peterson, Cora Mae Peterson, Morris Frownfelter, John Crum, Morris Peterson, and Vernon Siegriest and the sponsors, Mrs. Henry Miller and Mrs. Harry Yakle and the hostess Neoma Markley. The next meeting will be a Christmas meeting at the home of Morris Frownfelter.

DELAVAN TEACHER SUES FOR DIVORCE
Suit was filed in district court this morning by Wanda Briix, a teacher at Delavan, from Robert Briix. The plaintiff in her petition alleges that the couple was married in Winfield in 1930 and are the parents of three children. The court is asked to grant a divorce on the grounds of gross neglect of duty, give custody of the children to plaintiff and allow adequate support for the minors. Hembrow & Leanord are the attorneys.

Mrs. Wanda Zirkle Briix, daughter of Mrs. D. L. Zirkle, Winfield, was married to Frank. A. Jilka, son of Mrs. Annie Jilka, 1006 N. 9th, and the late Frank Jilka, Aug. 20 at her home in Herington.

The Ref. Leonard Reifel, Sedalia, Mo., received the couple's double ring vows before a wall mirror background with an arrangement of large white mums and accents of red ribbon.

The bride wore a black lace and cotton sheath with a black velvet half-hat and corsage of red carnations.

Mr. and Mrs. Milan Harkness, Delavan, were attendants. Mrs. Harkness' black sheath was worn with a black hat and a white carnation corsage.

A wedding dinner followed at The Outpost in Council Grove.

Mrs. Jilka received an AB degree from Southwestern College, Winfield, and took graduate work at Emporia State Teachers' College. She is librarian at the Herington high school.

Her husband received a BS degree from Kansas Wesleyan University and a MS degree from Emporia State. He has been principal at Neosho Rapids Rural high school the past three years. Mr. Jilka was in the army for four years in World War II, three spent in overseas duty.

After Sept. 1, they will be at home at 201 W. Walnut, Herington.

DELAVAN ALUMNI PLAN NOON MEAL AT 1995 REUNION

A changed from an evening to a noon meal, on a trial basis, is planned for the 1995 Delavan Rural High School Alumni Association Reunion. That change was approved Saturday night at this year's reunion, attended by 53 alumni and 46 guests.

It is hoped the noon meal will allow more to attend the annual event.

Officers elected for 1994-1995 were: Harold Diepenbrock, president; Olive Schoof, Vice-President; Margie Bettles, Secretary; and Vivian Wilson, treasurer.

Wanda (Zirkle) Jilka, a teacher at DRHS from 1927-1928 and 1942-1947, was at this year's reunion. She was accompanied by two daughters, Virginia Lowther and Bonnie Briix.

WANDA I. JILKA

HERINGTON -- Wanda I. Jilka, 97, Herington, died Friday, March 7, 2003.

Mrs. Jilka was born Wanda I. Zirkle o Aug. 17, 1905 at South Haven. She was the Herington High School librarian from 1952 until retiring in 1971.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank A., in 1987.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Lowther of Emporia and Bonnie Thompson of McPherson; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Herington. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington.

Memorials may be made to the church, in care of Donahue Funeral Home, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, 57449-3038.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and 9:30 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the church. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Wanda Jilka

HERINGTON --- Wanda I. Jilka, 97, Herington, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at a Herington hospital.

Mrs. Jilka was the Herington High School librarian for Unified School District No. 487 from 1953 to 1971. She also taught private piano lessons and composed music. She was an author.

She was born Aug. 17, 1905, in South Haven to David Luther and Rettie Tedrow Zirkle. She earned a bachelor's degree from Southwestern College and a master's degree from Emporia State University.

Mrs. Jilka was a member of Herington United Methodist Church and the Martha Circle. She was the church organist for 35 years. She was a member of the Chapter FC of the PEO Sisterhood, Herington Lioness Club, Daughter of the American Revolution, DAC and the Tri-County Arts Association. She was active in the Tri-County and Kansas historical societies, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kansas Library Association and Retired Teachers Association. She was an honorary life member of the Kansas State Teachers Association.

She married Robert C. Briix on Aug. 10, 1930, in Winfield. They divorced. She married Frank A. Jilka on Aug. 20, 1958, in Herington. He died Oct. 31, 1987. Mrs. Jilka also was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Joan Lee, on May 30, 1957.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Lowther, Emporia, and Bonnie Thompson, McPherson; seven grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Herington. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington. Mrs. Jilka will lie in state at the funeral home from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday and after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Herington United Methodist Church and sent in care of the funeral home, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, 67449-3038.
