He married Mrs Billie Sue (Eaves) Kornegay on August 22, 1941 in Beaumont, Jefferson, Texas, and they had two children, Susann and John Philip "Phil" Hughes.
After Billie's death, Truett married Josephine Louise "Jo" Timms in Lubbock, Texas, and they had two children, Donnie Lee Hughes and Deborah Mozelle Hughes.
Truett also had a stepdaughter, Sylvia Lane Kornegay, who was the daughter of Billie and her first husband, Thomas "Tom" Herndon Kornegay.
