Reverend Harley Hughes was a Southern Baptist minister and served South Plains, Texas churches for over thirty years in Abilene, Levelland, Maple, Petersburg, Whiteface, Morton and Lums Chapel, near Littlefield. He also served as both the pastor and the music director in some of these churches.

He married Ollie Myrtice "Myrtie" Watson and they had five children; Henry Elwin Hughes, George Perry Hughes, Alda Marie Hughes Burnett, Truett Watson Hughes and Myrtie Lois Hughes Gregory.
After Myrtie's death, he married Cynthia Lee Evans.
