Marvin Besteman, Sr., 94, of Rudyard, Michigan, was a longtime logger and sawmill operator. He sold fresh eggs in Sault Ste. Marie every Friday for many years. Mr. Besteman died Sunday, October 8, 2006, at his home.

He was born July 6, 1912, in Grand Rapids, to Peter Besteman and Rena (nee Postma) Besteman.

At age five, he moved with his family to Rudyard. After working in logging for several years, he started Besteman Sawmill in the 1940s and operated it until he retired. Mr. Besteman and his wife, Geraldine, enjoyed gardening and had a vegetable stand each summer. They also raised chickens and sold fresh eggs. Mr. Besteman's favorite hobby was fishing, and he invited many friends to fish with him.

He was a member of the Rudyard Christian Reformed Church, a board member of the North Rudyard Christian School, and he served on the Kinross Township Board of Review for 40 years. Mr. Besteman and his brother in-law sang in a quartet that performed at many churches, with his sister, Jo, accompanying them.

Mr. Besteman was survived by one son and his family, Marvin and Dee Besteman of Rudyard; three daughters and their families, Mary and Howard Kouw of Zeeland, Virginia and Fred English of Tomahawk, Wisconsin, and Irene and Arden Den Bleyker of Vanderwagen, New Mexico; 12 grandchildren, Doug, Mark, Dean, and Marshall Besteman, Kevin Kouw, Lisa Finnie, Sam English, Cheryl Bert, Carrie Hansen, Nicole Leatherwood, Heather Den Bleyker, and Alex Den Bleyker; and 13 great-grandchildren. Also surviving were one sister, Johanna Folkersma, and two brothers and their families, Jay and Edna Besteman and Elmer Besteman, all of Rudyard.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine (Hesselink); one son, Roger Besteman; and two brothers, Christopher Besteman and Glen Besteman.
