With great sadness, the family of Bert Satterfield, Jr. announces his passing on November 12, 2011 in Valencia, California after a valiant struggle with numerous health issues.

He was born May 14, 1930 in Phoenix, Arizona to G. Bert and Sylvia Marie (Roden) Satterfield. On September 23, 1950 he married Netta Lou Holliday in Arvin, California. They had two children: Sheryl Ann and Larry Bert Satterfield.

Bert and Netta moved to Mojave in 1951 when he was offered a job driving a gasoline delivery truck for a local distributer. The owner also had a local fast-pitch softball team and wanted Bert to be its pitcher. People say he had a mean curve ball.

In 1957, he became involved in law enforcement when he became Constable of the local Mojave Judicial District court. In 1959 he resigned as the Constable to begin as a Deputy with the Kern County Sheriff's Office in Mojave. The local office, at that time, covered a large portion of the East Kern area, so he knew many people in the surrounding communities. In May of 1971 he was appointed as Officer of the Year by the Antelope Valley Bar Association.

When asked about his most memorable experience as a Deputy, he stated that it was guarding Spade Cooley, the legendary musician, who was convicted of murdering his wife. Mr. Cooley was on a suicide watch, so someone had to be with him all night until he could be transported to Bakersfield the next morning. The media frenzy was furious and was something that was not seen in this part of the desert. He said that it was a unique experience to just sit a stare at someone all night long.

On July 1, 1971, Bert was appointed as a Judge to the East Kern Justice Court. He was nominated by Kern County Supervisor David Head. He had to qualify for the position by passing a State Judicial Council examination. There are many stories around town of having to face Judge Satterfield and having to face the music of whatever punishment was meted out. This was by far his favorite job.

He later worked for the Public Defenders office and retired from the District Attorneys office.

Bert was active in the Mojave Little League, Babe Ruth League, and one of the founding members and past president of the Mojave High School Booster Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Netta, and his daughter Sheryl Bickell.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his sister, Delma (Gene) Gary; son Larry (Diana) Satterfield; son-in-law Wayne Bickell; grandchildren Chris (Kim) Bickell, Staci (Keith) Storm, Erica (Andrew) Monteabaro, and Geoff (Char) Satterfield, and seven great-grandchildren.

There will be no formal services, but the family will be holding an open house between the hours of 11:00 am and 4:00 p.m. at the home of his son Larry, on Saturday, November 19th at 2884 Corona Avenue, in Mojave to celebrate his life. He will be inurned in the Mojave Cemetery beside his wife Netta.
