Elizabeth was the second of ten known children born to Elizabeth Taylor and Wales Gathercole. She arrived in the U.S. with her mother and siblings in 1885. The family settled in Lucas County where her father had migrated the year before and was employed as a miner.

Elizabeth married Jasper Halferty on 5 Apr 1893. They had thirteen children: John, Myrtle, Margaret, Verna, Matthew, Raymond, Dennis, Joseph, Glenn, David, Robert, Elizabeth and Donald.
