Jane was the third of seven children born to Elizabeth Halferty and Sam Patterson. Not long after joining the U.S. Air Force, she was stationed at Lowry AFB where she met and married Sergeant Dick Funk on 29 May 1956. They had four children as Dick continued his military career. Their last duty station was Castle AFB, and they remained in the Atwater, CA, area after military retirement.
