One of my treasures is a little brown leather autograph book signed by many of her doctors and other caregivers.
"Dear Dorothy, I hope you have no dislike for doctors who are always poking needles into your veins - Good luck! Dr D.A. Guthiel"
"Dear Dorothy, To the sweatest pt 2 West has ever had. I hope she stays that way. Annemarie"
"Dear Dorothy, Now that we've gotten you out of coma I hope we can keep you (that) way - so that you can visit us as a friend instead of as a patient. Joseph S. Dewitte, M.D."
Most of these entries are from 1939 and 1940. For doctors and other hospital staff to take the time and write with such meaning shows me what kind of a person I never got to meet.
Dorthea won ribbons for her sewing and crocheting.
Her grave remained unmarked for many years, but circumstances allowed me to have a marker made with scrap granite some 50 years after her death.
She was much loved and missed by her sister Janice.
