My GG Grandfather
One of the Oldest Members of the Police Force Gone.
Former Police Sergeant Walter Dicks, of the Ottawa Police Department, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his residence, 484 Gladstone Ave. Heart disease is said to be the cause of his death.
The late Sergeant Dicks was one of the oldest members of the force having joined when twenty-one years of age, over forty years ago. When he was superannuated two years ago, he had been a member of the force for thirty years. He was 63 years of age.
Died Suddenly.
Sergeant Dicks was alone in the house when he died. About three o'clock a neighbour noticed him sitting near the window. The neighbor waved his arm and Sergeant Dicks waved a reply. A little later the neighbor was again passing the window and thought Mr. Dicks appeared ill. He went in to see if he could be of any assistance. There was no answer in response to his knocking on the door, so he forced his way in, and found the late Sergeant Dicks dead.
It was thought that he had been preparing to go out as he had fastened all the doors. It was also thought that he had been reading just previous to taking suddenly ill as he had his glasses on which he never wore on the street. About two years ago he had had a bad attack of heart trouble and had been complaining of feeling unwell recently.
Deceased was born in Essex, England and came to Canada in 1873. He joined the Police force early in 1881. A number of years later he was attached to the detective staff and in 1897 he was appointed a sergeant. At the time of the death of Chief of Detectives Robillard, about thirteen years ago, Sergeant Dicks was appointed to that office. He remained there for about three years and then took up his duties again as a sergeant, acting in that capacity until he was superannuiated in May 1915.

A sad feature of the death was that Mrs. Dicks, wife of the deceased, had left the house only a short time before to purchase some things to forward to her son Walter, who is on active service, and almost the last act of the late Sergeant Dicks was to consult with his wife as to what articles they should forward to their soldier son.
Besides his widow, deceased leaves two daughters, Mrs Morrison of Montreal and Gertrude, at home and two sons, Ptv Walter Dicks, on overseas service and T.J Dicks of Riverside Park, also four brothers, T.J of Ottawa, and Frederick, Daniel and Harry of Teulon, Manitoba.
Deceased will be buried with Masonic honors. He was a member of Fidelity Lodge, the members of which will have charge of the funeral, which will take place Monday afternoon at 1:30 from the family residence to Beechwood cemetery.
