Master Corporal, a flight engineer with the 430 Tactical Helicopter Squadron based at Valcartier, near Quebec City. Aged 38 from Montreal. He was deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces serving in Afghanistan.
MCpl Audet, Cpl Martin Joannette and a British army officer, Capt Ben Babington-Browne, died when their Griffon helicopter crashed during a mission near a forward operating base in Zabul province about 80 kilometres northeast of Kandahar City. Three other Canadian soldiers were slightly injured and the two pilots also survived. A flight safety investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash. The military has ruled out enemy action.
MCpl Audet was on his second overseas deployment, the first in Afghanistan. A scuba enthusiast, he was passionate about exploration and travel. Pat was remembered as a big man with a gentle heart, sparkling eyes and an infectious laugh.
His medals and awards include the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD), and South-West Asia Service Medal (SWASM), Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous).
Predeceased by his mother Micheline Lefebvre, he is survived by his wife Katherine Potvin, his parents Gilles Audet & Yvette Lebreux and many other family members.
Military funeral service held on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Ste-Jeanne-d'Arc chapel, on the Valcartier military base, Courcelette, Québec, followed by interment at Parc Commémoratif La Souvenance, quartier Laurentien, Québec.
There have been 124 Canadian military fatalities since the start of the Afghanistan conflict in 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
