A Polish immigrant, he moved to Canada in 1990 and eventually followed in the footsteps of his father, who was a police officer in Poland for 30 years. Eric joined the police force age 48 after a career in sales. Affectionately known as "Pickles" for his love of the food, he was a popular member of the East Division patrol. He was an active volunteer with the Polish Community Association and played in the Old Timers' Ottawa Carleton Soccer League.
Cst. Czapnik is survived by his parents, his wife Anna and four children, extended family, colleagues and friends.
Funeral held January 7, 2010 at the Ottawa Civic Centre. The service was attended by thousands of police officers, firefighters, paramedics, other first responders, and dignitaries from across North America.
