Asa was a son of Gilman and Susan (Smith) Emery. He was married in 1861 to Mary Jane Welch and they had two sons, Frederick and Burton.

Asa was a veteran of the Civil War, his service being as follows:
Enlisted as a Private on 07 December 1861
Enlisted in Company D, 8th Infantry Regiment Vermont on 18 February 1862.
Wounded on 27 May 1863 at Port Hudson, LA
Mustered out Company D, 8th Infantry Regiment Vermont on 22 June 1864

After the war, Asa took up farming in Groton. His death was due to consumption.
His younger brother, Charles G. Emery, was the great-grandfather of my husband. The brothers served together in the 8th VT Co. D. during the war, but Charles lived much longer, dying in 1927.
