John Garrett, 73, of Peoria died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, in a place of peace of which he was very fond, Jubilee State Park.
He was born March 11, 1938, in Peoria, Ill., to Paul Rupert Garrett and Caroline Kruse Garrett. On July 3, 1960, at University United Methodist Church, he married Beverly June Mosher. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Scott (Tonya) Garrett, Gwen Allar and Angela (Darren) Douglas; one sister, Jane Garrett Duvendack; and seven grandchildren, Natalie Garrett, Garrett and Isabella Allar, and Abigail, Emily, Elizabeth and Lila Douglas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Gloria (Garrett) Severson and Connie (Garrett) Johnsen; one brother, Paul Richard Garrett; and one son-in-law, Daniel Allar.
John's career included work at Hyster, Caterpillar and as a site manager at Utilities Incorporated. John spent a good part of his career in sales with Alberto Culver, Standard Brands, Lily Tulip and Midwest Veneer.
John never met a stranger. His great sense of humor made him a joy to be around. His interests were well rounded as he enjoyed off-road motorcycles, sailing and building his family home. Family was the center of his life, as were vacations camping and canoeing coast to coast.
He was a member of University United Methodist Church, where a memorial service will be held. Visitation will be on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, from 2 to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at 12 noon. Cremation has been accorded.
In lieu of flowers, donations are accepted by CEFCU for the John Garrett's Support for Alzheimer's Fund or to University United Methodist Church.
The family would like to extend our gratitude to everyone for their prayers and support through this family crisis. The Peoria County Sheriff's Department, volunteer fire departments, multi-state search groups, and neighbors throughout the state who have searched are now extensions of our family. Thank you all. About 2:45 p.m. on Feb. 11, John, who suffered from Alzheimer's Disease, walked away from the house he and his wife Beverly had built with their own hands 35 years ago in the 5800 block of North Koerner Road. A massive search effort — purportedly the largest ever undertaken in the state — ensued, covering about 30 square miles by foot, hoof and helicopter.
That search ended Sunday morning (2/19/12) about 5½ miles as the crow flies from the Garretts' Peoria County home, with the discovery of John's body in a rocky area of Kickapoo Creek not far from the West Fussner Road crossing in Jubilee College State Park.
Cause of Death: Drowning
