Officer Bergeron was killed in the line of duty on the morning of Saturday, May 1. It would have been his day off had he not offered to fill in as a patrol supervisor for another officer. Sgt. Bergeron had responded to a carjacking call, and while sitting in his squad was ambushed by two young men. He died enroute to Regions Hospital.

Thanks to the efforts of the Saint Paul Police and numerous metro agencies, both suspects were located. The first suspect was killed later that morning, after attacking a police officer on perimeter duty. The second suspect was arrested in the early afternoon.

Sgt. Bergeron was 49 years old and a resident of Hugo. He grew up in White Bear Lake, one of eleven children; he became a police officer in 1982. For a short while he worked for the Ramsey County Parks and Patrols before joining the Maplewood Police Department in 1984. During his 26 1/2 years with the department, he served as a patrol officer, a training officer, an investigator, and in 1998 he was promoted to sargeant. He was also a volunteer fireman and medic.

He is survived by a wife and two daughters, three brothers and seven sisters.
