Alex served with the Union forces during the Civil War in Company C, 143rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. He enlisted at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania on August 4, 1862 for a period of three years and was mustered in as a Private on August 27, 1862 at Camp Luzerne.

He was admitted to the 3rd Division Hospital, 1st Army Corps, at Windmill Point near Aquia Creek, Lancaster County, Virginia on April 28, 1863 for typhoid fever and died there the next month. He was originally buried at Marlboro Point, Stafford County, Virginia. His body was relocated to the Fredericksburg National Cemetery when that cemetery was established after the War.

Alex was the 3rd of 15 children, and the oldest son. Before the War, he was a farm hand, working on his father's farm.
