George was the son of James Dobson and Eliza Cresswell. He married Mary Eva in England in 1867. He worked in the coal mines in Wales, where their first daughter, Mary Elizabeth (my great grandmother), was born.
George and his young family immigrated to the United States, traveling from England on the ship Helvetia, and arrived at Castle Garden, New York City, on August 14, 1868. He and Mary had ten more children born in the United States: Sarah, George James, Emma Laura, Minnie Eva, Lucinda, Viola Fanny, Laura May, Harry, Leroy, and another infant who died.
George continued to work in the coal mines in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and died of miner's asthma.
