Maria was born in Prussia to Maria and Gottholt Herrmann. She married Christian Christopher Koch, and they raised eight children: Mary Sophie, Gustav, John Gotthold, Gottlob Gottlieb, Anna, Maria Bertha, Katherine Hannah, and Christian Andrew.
Four months after the birth of her sixth child, Maria, Christian, and their children traveled from Bremen, Germany on the ship Deutschland, and arrived at Castle Garden in New York City on May 13, 1872. The next summer, she gave birth to Katherine Hannah - her first child born in the U.S.
In about 1879, the family moved to Dennison Township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, started a farm, and lived in a log cabin. A few years after her husband's death, her son Gottlob built a frame house on the farm. Maria lived on this family homestead until she died at the age of 90.
