James I. Newcombe, 74, Martinsburg formerly of Williamsburg passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Southeast Georgia Health Systems, Brunswick, GA.

James better known as "Jim" or "Newc" was born in Huntingdon, son of the late James I. and Ruth (Briggs) Newcombe. On June 27, 1970 he married Linda Funk at the Zion Lutheran Church, Williamsburg.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 47 years; in-laws, Charlie and Brenda Funk; a nephew, Steven Funk; a niece, Holly Seby (Stephen); a great-nephew, Evan Seby; and many wonderful family members and friends.

Jim attended Alfarata grade school and was a 1960 graduate of Huntingdon High School. After graduating from Lock Haven University with a degree in math education, he received a master’s degree in school counseling from Shippensburg University.

He had a total of thirty six years in the education field. Jim taught math for one year in Rockville, MD, before moving to the Williamsburg Community School District, where he taught math and then served as the schools guidance counselor for 32 years, retiring in 2001.

Newc grew up in and was a former member of the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the National Education Association (NEA), Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), and the Williamsburg Education Association (WEA). Jim served as president of the Central Region Department of Pupil Personnel Services (PSEA) for eleven years. During this time, he was involved in the planning of the Central Region Education Conference which was held in State College. As a member of the WEA, he served for many years as a faculty representative and as a member of the negotiating team.

He enjoyed sports, traveling, watching western movies and was also an avid hunter and woodcarver.

Friends will be received from 10 am until the 12 noon, memorial service, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, Pastor Tiffany E. Marvich officiating. Private inurnment will be held at Huntingdon Memorial Gardens.
