Businessman and golf promoter. The founder of George S. May International Company, he became interested in the business behind the game of golf, not just the playing of the game. He was known for his keen business insights, promotional flair, innovative ideas and vision for the future of golf. From 1941 to 1958, he played host to the game's greatest players for 10 days each year at his Tam O'Shanter Country Club in Niles, Illinois. He is responsible for these 'firsts' of golf: first live nationwide TV broadcast of a golf event, first use of bleachers at a golf event, first leader boards to show golfer's scores, first to allow ticket holders access to the clubhouse, first to introduce golf carts for club members, first to have monthly minimum dues for club members, and first to install telephones at each tee for golfer's use. Golf Magazine lists him as one of the 100 Heroes of American Golf. He was inducted into the Illinois Professional Golfer's Association Hall of Fame on October 9, 1992.
