SSG John E. Cooper of Ewing, Ky., lived in Ripley for three years before moving with his family to Ewing in Fleming County where he graduated from Fleming High School in 1995. He didn't go out much preferring to spend his time at home with his parents and siblings. He had wanted to be in the military and since he was a child that was his dream. So his Army career began Sept. 21, 1995, and through the years he had enhanced his education through the Primary Leadership Development Course and Air Assault School. During his military life, Cooper was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Service Medal, Air Assault Badge and Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon. For his service, the Army presented him the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, and the Air Assault Badge. He was 29.
