Born to James and Matte Van Duyne. Attended John L. Vestal Grade School, Jefferson High School and Albany (Lewis & Clark) College. She served in the US Coast Guard SPARS during World War II. She married Loren E. Bailey in 1948. They divorced in 1956. Most of her life was spent in Portland and in 2003, she moved to Jennings McCall Assisted Living in Forest Grove.
She was a life member in both the Portland and American Rose Societies. During the Portland Rose Festival of 1941, she was crowned "Miss Cotillion."
She was active in the American Legion, Musicians Post 185, having served as both commander and chaplain.
In 1973, Marthella was honored as Federal Employee of the Year and again in 1977 as Woman of the Year with the Timberline Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.
She was a Past Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star and a life member in both Myrtle Chapter #15 and Rose Croix Chapter #148.
She helped as a greeter and in the Sunday School, both at Unity Church of Portland and, after her move, Hillsboro Presbyterian Church.
She was known as "The Rose Lady."
Survivors include her son, Phillip, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth; son, Kenneth Bailey; daughter, Kathleen McMillan, all of Portland; grandson, Alex McMillan, and his wife, Sherri; Marthella's great-grandchildren, Brianna Joy and Jackson Bailey McMillan; and grandson, Joe McMillan.
