He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He and Rfn Luke Farmer were killed after an improvised explosive device detonated while they were on a foot patrol near Sangin in Helmand Province.

Aged 30. He enlisted in the army in 1996 and served in Sierra Leone, Cyprus, Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan. In March 2009 he completed the Platoon Serjeants Battle Course with the highest possible grade. He was deployed as section commander with 2 Platoon, A Company and respected as an inspirational leader.

Cpl Brownson leaves behind his wife Leeanne, two daughters Ginalee and Morgan, and his unborn child, along with other family and friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held on February 3, 2010 St Andrew's Church, Bishop Auckland. About 1,000 mourners packed the church, the largest in County Durham.

In September 2010, Cpl Brownson was posthumously awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for his acts of bravery in leading a night patrol in the face of the enemy.
