He was one of the original settlers of Craig, Colorado. He also served in the legislature for a short time. Started out as a carpenter until 1893. He came to Colorado in 1883 and became a cattleman and then went into farming hay. He was a Master Mason and a Republican. Story: Frank B. Ranney , Fortification rancher, looks like the youngest fisherman for his age in these parts. The other day he purchased a fishing license as has been his custom for years and years. The clerk in filling out the application inquired of his age, but before the answer could be given hazarded to a guess that he must be about 60. Frank remarked, " More than that." The clerk raised the ante to 70. Frank smiled and shook his head. The clerk tried a third time then gave up. He dropped his pen in consternation when the youthful fisherman informed him that he was 82 years old... His application states that he has lived in these here parts for 53 years.

He belonged to the Gun Club. He was listed as one of those people interested in Craig Irrigating Ditch. He was also interested in Brotherton Ditch. He was one of the founders of Masonic Lodge in Craig.

Is on abstracts as owning land in Sunset Valley View, Holiday Park and Ranney Additions (Ranney Addition is west of Ranney Street and south of Victory. His 150 acres became occupied by the Moffat Oil Company station, the Craig Farmers Mill, and the Cullie Walsh ranch. After selling his ranch he moved to Fortification creek area to be with his brother Charles. Shirley has a copy of the deed of land between Charles and Frank dated 5 April 1921 . The property was deeded for educational and religious purposes and public gatherings. He was also a Master Mason.
