He received a high school education in Michigan. He supplemented his schooling with diligent study and at the age of 17 years began teaching school in Michigan. After teaching in Michigan for six years, he and his sister came to Colorado to join their brother Frank who had homesteaded land adjoining what is now Craig. For 4 years he taught school in Craig, being one of the earliest teachers of the frontier settlement. From 1899 to 1903, he conducted a drug store in Craig and in the last year traded this Craig store for a ranch at Fortification Creek 25 miles north of Craig . He was engaged in ranching and stock raising chiefly , but for a number of years has operated a filling station . He took an active part in the Republication party. He was a member of the Masonic order, a past Master of Yampa # 88. Funeral services were conducted at the Craig Congregational church."
He and his brother Frank were thinking of starting a new townsite called Ranneyville at head of Fortification Creek. A garage, blacksmith shop and general store were to be built there and plans for a post office were in the makins according to an article in the Courier or Empire on 6/22/1922.
He belonged to the Gun Club in 1894 - 1897 and was one of the top scorers. He taught in Craig in 1891 and also in 1892 - 1893. He and Mrs. Peck were the first to teach in craig in a 2-story building.He was one of the first to have a windmill in Craig . He lived at the Tucker place which was the Besser place. He and his wife were the first to plant plum trees and have their trees bear plums.
He had a Patent Land Grant.
