Steve was born in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, England. His parents had wanted him to be a doctor but he failed to enter medical college and instead spent three years in a shipping office, eventually qualifying as a member of the Chartered Institute of Ship Brokers. For five years he played in the evenings with a semi-jazz band called The Rumble at the South Bank Jazz Club. In a bid for success the band moved to London but after months without work they split-up. The news of Steve's joining T.Rex was announced in the music press on December 12th, the day after the release of T.Rex
He appeared on all of Bolan's most memorable hit singles from "Ride a White Swan" (1970) to "Laser Love" (1976), as well as the albums Electric Warrior (1971) to Dandy in the Underworld (1977). His innovative and, for the time, sophisticated bass playing can be seen to good effect in the movie Born to Boogie.
Steve joined T. Rex in 1971 and remained part of the band through 1977’s Dandy in the Underworld, their final release before Bolan’s death, after which he became a session guitarist of some note, working with Wreckless Eric and Chris Spedding.
Steve is commemorated with a memorial plaque on the steps at Marc Bolan's Rock Shrine.
Steve died in a car crash on 28 April 1981, when he was returning to his home near Vale de Parra, Algarve, Portugal.
He was also a member of Ham and Petersham Rifle and Pistol Club until his death. The club has a competition Trophy dedicated to Steve which is still run every year.
