JoAnn Alvis Gust, 75, passed away April 25, 2015, at her home in Naples, FL, surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren and an abundance of close family.

JoAnn was born February 6, 1940 at Burnham City Hospital in Champaign, IL, the first of six children to Joseph Edward Alvis and Mildred Pearl Hannah. As a young girl, she lived in Mansfield, IL with her grandparents, Hattie and Elmer Curry, with her parents and siblings just down the alley on Short Street. She was baptized at and attended Mansfield United Methodist Church.

JoAnn attended Mansfield schools and graduated from Mansfield Community High School. She was an honor student and a proud cheerleader for the Mansfield Cardinals. Many of JoAnn's still close friends are Mansfield classmates.

JoAnn met Paul Edmund Giblin her senior year. They were married in Elgin, lived in Las Vegas and Aurora, and divorced later in Champaign. Independently raising her two young children, Paula and Michael, JoAnn soon met the love of her life, Howard Henry Gust, a University of Illinois student. They were married in Champaign and moved to St. Charles, near Howard's parents. Son Jeffrey was born in Illinois, and the Gusts moved to Indianapolis in 1968 where son Jonathan was born.

Howard's employment brought them to Wheaton in 1972, where JoAnn would spend the next 38 years. JoAnn's children all graduated high school there and she organized and orchestrated many showers, weddings, parties, dates, gatherings and trips for her growing family.

In Wheaton, she owned several antique shops, Antiques on Hale, Stuff, Etc., and Memories Lane. She was proud of the contributions she offered to Downtown Wheaton. JoAnn and Howard became full-time Florida residents in 2010, and JoAnn became Office Coordinator at Elite Consulting of SWFL in Naples in 2013. JoAnn worked hard her entire life and just recently retired in February at age 75.

JoAnn was always learning something new, collecting art and history, traveling the world, and sharing all with the loves of her life. Several years ago, JoAnn began her favorite hobby, genealogy. Her passion for learning about her family history led to her to become a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Naples Big Cypress Chapter, and of the St. Andrew's Society of Southwest Florida. She was also a member of the Clan Hannay Society and was very proud to have visited Sorbie Tower in Galloway, Scotland. Additionally, she was a member of the Piatt County and Marion County Illinois Historical & Genealogical Societies. JoAnn recently received DAR insignia pins for William Hanna and William Patterson.

JoAnn's greatest joy was being a mother and she always had an open door to help others in need. The Gusts generously provided for and raised several family members and friends of their children. JoAnn lived for her grandchildren, and nothing tickled her more than to spend time with them and exhibit a life well-lived. The Gusts celebrated their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2013 with their beloved family.

Her family and friends, old and new, will always revere her grace, gumption, loyalty and love. Her spirited laughter and generous soul will be missed profoundly.

JoAnn is survived by her husband and best friend of 52 years, Howard, daughter Paula (Brian) Olson, West Chicago, IL, sons Michael Giblin, West Chicago, IL, Jeffrey Gust, Atwood, IL, and Jonathan (Tatiana) Gust, Naples, FL, and six grandchildren, LeAnn and Ashley Olson, Michelle (Owen) Kuntz, Miranda Gust, and Joseph and Jacob Gust.

Also surviving are her sister, Jeanine (Art) McHenry, sister-in-law, Kathy Gust, and many special nieces, nephews and family members, Danny (Sandra) Gust, Gary (Joyce) Gust, Patty Ismail and Alberto Wilson, Janet Alvis and daughter Jillian, Justin (Lee) Alvis and daughters Alana and Alexa Greenwood, Jason (Kristie) Alvis and daughters Jordan and Jenna, Jamie (Joey) Alvis and daughters, Addison, Aerin, Ella and Grace, and Joy (Michael) Prater.

She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Giblin, her parents, and her brothers, John, Jerry, Jack and Jimmy Joe.
JoAnn's family is grateful for the warm caregivers of AVOW Carelink and for the kind ministry of Reverend Douglas Learned of The Moorings Presbyterian Church. Cremation services were provided by Naples Funeral Home, Naples, FL. Services and interment will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Kelso M. Garver American Legion Post 650, 118 North Jefferson Street, Mansfield, IL 61854, or the Mansfield High School Alumni Association, 1321 East 3100 N Road, Mansfield, IL 61854.
