John was born October 30, 1889 in Perley, Minnesota to Gjertrude Marie Ottesson and Peter Jorgen Brevik. When Peter & Gjertrude came from Norway, they changed their name from Jonson to Brevik due to so many families with the last name of Jonson in Perley, Minnesota. Brevik was the name of the farm they came from in Norway. John's siblings were: Katrina, Kaia, Petra, Inga, Hilda, Manda and Paul.

The original certificate of Baptism, issued by Rev J.M.O. Ness, Pastor of Kirkebo Lutheran Congregation at Perley, which shows that John Hitman Klabo Brevik was born October 30, 1889 and baptized at Perley, Minnesota on December 2, 1889. John's birth certificate states he was born in Norman County, Township of Lee and his parents residence was in Perley, Minn. Gjertrud Brevik signed under the certificate of parent, and stated her address was Thief River Falls, Minnesota, but their is no date beside her signature.

In November 1911, he married Belle Marie Dahl. During their married life they lived in Minnesota, North Dakota, Canrose, Alberta, Canada, Blaine, Ferndale, Bellingham and finally Everett, Washington.

Their children were:

2. James & George Peter, twins born 1913. George died in infancy
3. Peter 1914-1914
4. George Palmer born 1915
5. Julia Irene born 1916
6. Ernest born 1918
7. Clifford born 1919
8. Ralph born 1921

After Belle Marie's death, John was married to Grandma Bessie until her death.
