Marta Catharina "Catharine" Minter Sillix began her life in Arendtsville, Adams County, Pennsylvania, the 3rd of 17 children born to Martin Minter, and his wife Barbara (maiden name unknown). Catharine was married twice, first to Henry Hoffman of Adams County, Pennsylvania who died in 1824. From this union was born three daughters Mary Magdalene, Elizabeth, and Mary Ann. Following the death of Henry Hoffman, Catharine married Thomas Sillix. From this marriage were born three children: Martin (born 1829), Catharine (born 1832), and Jacob (born 1839.)
