Martin Minter was born the son of Hans Martin Minter (Anglicized to John Martin) and Caterina Minter (Anglicized to Catharine) in Arendtsville, Pennsylvania. Martin had two wives, both named Barbara. The maiden name of the first Barbara has yet to be discovered, but the second wife was Barbara Zepp, who appears to have been the housekeeper for the Minter household while living in Pennsylvania. In the early 1800s, Martin moved his ever growing family to what is now Carroll County, Maryland, purchasing a farm from his Zepp in-laws. The farm is still in use as of the 21st century, and is located on the Lineboro Road, a few miles northeast of Manchester, Maryland.

Martin fathered 17 children, and remarkably all of the offspring lived into their adult years. Four generations later his descendants live throughout the United States.
