Robert Lisle was born in Reno, Nevada but spent his formative years on Long Island, N.Y., where he received a scholarship to Harvard University. There he was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree.

World War II interrupted his education. Despite a 4-F classification because of blindness in one eye and deafness, he joined the Army in 1945 and subsequently was stationed in occupied Germany. In 1971, he graduated from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. He served in the Army on both active and reserve duty for 25 years, ending his career as a Colonel.

In 1955, he obtained his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. He was the head of the English department at St. Timothy's School in Stevenson, Maryland. Later, he served as Dean of Humanities at the University of Baltimore. In 1969, he became part of the faculty of Madison College, now James Madison University, where he taught Latin and Greek and continued there until his retirement in 1994.

In 1972, he moved to Staunton, Virginia where he became a member of the Forum Club and served on the City Council. He enjoyed jogging, traveling to foreign countries, playing bridge and reading. He always missed the shore and sailboats.
