He also served Queen Elizabeth I after the second year of her reign. His position was undoubtedly that of Asst. Sergeant of the Queen's Carriages, with his cousin, John Ownstead as Sergeant.

When in the country, they resided at Court Farm, and here one night when roads were especially bad and the queen returning from one of her trips, she spent the night at Court Farm. The Greshams held the court itself, but were Catholic, so Elizabeth preferred to stop with Nycholas.

Inscription

This Olive liv'd much more content with me
Than did the Dove, good No'h, in ark with thee,
And brought me Olive-branch to glad myne hart ...
Her heart, her mynd her soule, her faith most pure,
Weare linck't in Christ, so stedfast and so sure,
As help her soar more high than Dove could flye,
Now therefore No'h, thy Dove I must pass bye.

She died on November 19, 1603, aged 55, having surviving children; Harman, John, Thomas, James, Joan, and Susanna, by Nicholas Alwood of Saundersted in Surrey, gent, to whom she was previously married;
and the seventh surviving only son, Oliver, by John Buck of Aldenham, gent, who, dedicates this list of virtues, most mournfully, to the memory of his most beautiful wife, Olive, daughter and heir of James Harman, father of Edmund of Burford, Taniton, and Wytford, in Oxon, Esquire.
