Dies Same Day as Brother in Bay St. Louis

The most Rev. Leo Fabian Fahey, 51, died here Friday night.

He had been bishop coadjutor of the Roman Catholic Baker city diocese, with right of succession to Bishop Joseph F. McGrath, since March 18, 1948.

Bishop Fahey had been ill for some time and last November underwent an operation in New Orleans.

Most of his life was spent in Mississippi. He was born at Bay St. Louis on July 21, 1898, and was ordained there May 28, 1926. Meanwhile he had been educated at St. Joseph's seminary, St. Benedict, La., Kendrick seminary, Webster Grove, Mo.; the North American college at Rome and the Sulpician seminary at Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C.

He came here two years ago from the pastorate of Sacred Heart church, Hattiesburg, Miss.

Then he underwent an operation last fall, he had been back only a few weeks from a pilgrimage to Rome.

Recitation of the rosary and the office of the dead will be at 7:30 p. m. Monday. Pontifical requiem mass will be sung at 10 a. m. Monday by Bishop Edward Kelly of Boise, with Archbishop Edward D. Howard of Portland giving the sermon.

Burial will be in Mississippi

Bay St. Louis, Miss., April 1

Bishop Leo Fabian Fahey, DD, titular bishop of Ipsus, coadjutor bishop of Baker City, Ore., was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Fahey of Bay St. Louis.

He was confirmed in Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic church here at the age of 10 and was ordained in the same church.

Bishop Fahey's oldest brother, Joseph Fahey, died on Friday and was buried Saturday morning. That left Bishop Fahey the last of his immediate family.

Reports received here said the bishop died suddenly of a heart attack after receiving a telephone call from here that his brother had just died.

The body will be brought to Bay St. Louis for burial, but no arrangements have been completed.

Surviving are one niece, Mrs. George diBenedetto, the former Miss Irmabelle Fahey; one grand-nephew, Edmond Fahey III, and a grandniece, Fay diBenedetto.
