Tragedy struck our household on the morning of June 29th, 2010. I awoke with a phone call asking me if we had a dog named Dodger; with my reply of "yes." The gentleman on the other end explained to me in a tone of voice I didn't like hearing how he had killed Dodger just a few minutes earlier when Dodge had clipped the back tires of his truck while running with another dog that morning.
Dodger was my daughter Shelby's dog. She had gotten Dodge when he was a puppy, as a Christmas present in 2006. They were inseparable...they went together like peas & carrots, peanut butter & jelly and hamburger & french fries! The two were connected at the hip....I kid you not! Shelby would even take Dodger on some of her dates with her; she would tell me later; "Mom, he's the only man I'll ever need in my life."
What can I say about Dodger C? He was a true, true friend to us all. He was Shelby's protector. If we would all start "playin" around, Dodger would think we were hurting Shelby, and boy HE DID NOT LIKE THAT! He started barking and going after us! We'd tell him; "It's OK Dodge, we're just playin." LOL
He HATED when she would go off to work. I would have to keep him happy all day long; he didn't want granny....he wanted his mommy. He knew the sound of her car, when she was home & he would totally FREAK OUT when she walked through the door. He was all over her almost knocking her to the ground (several times). Heck, he even knew when I was talking to her on the phone. He would look at me; and I would have to tell him, "She'll be home soon Dodge." Those sad eyes he would always give me. It was enough to melt even the hardest of hearts. He absolutely LOVED going for his rides....LOVED IT! He could not wait to go for his daily ride. He knew where his place was in Shelby's Suzuki & nobody dared to take it. I think that is what he lived for...Shelby, his rides & playing.
He was a pretty smart dog. Shelby had taught him the neatest tricks. There was one where he would sit & you'd shout "BANG!" while pointing your finger at him (in the shape of a gun) he'd fall on his side & play dead. It was the cutest thing. Dodger also loved to play with balls. He'd get to playing with them by himself; and the next thing you know, there he'd be laying on his back holding the ball with his two front paws. The last & most recent trick he had learned was "shake."
This dog had such the personality about him. It's going to be so hard not having him around anymore. We all have an empty hole in our hearts, that now cannot ever be filled because that spot belonged to Dodger.
I hope he'll make new friends in heaven so he won't be alone. He didn't like to be alone. We'll see you again soon Dodge, but until then; be a good boy & let your mommy know your OK. She misses you so much....we all do. We love you boy.

Dodger's mommy's farewell letter to him

Dodger boy, I miss u so much. It's only been 3 days and I'm starting to wonder how I ever lived without u. I remember the first time I laid my eyes on u. You were the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen! I held u all day and all night. I didn't wanna let u go, now I understand why. u were the best friend I have ever had and the best gift. I was blessed to be able to call u mine and share my love with u. i wasn't ready for u to leave dodger. The littlest things remind me of u. The holes in the backyard, the spot u sat in my backseat(i hate being in my car, it feels way too empty without my co-pilot staring back at me; always with a smile), your muddy paw prints that u would always track in. I cant let u go...I promise u I will never forget u dodge. plz be waiting for me in my dreams tonight..<3 I miss u. -Shelby (mommy)
