John was first married to Margaret Braxton Bruce. Margaret passed in 1730. After Margaret's death, John later married Bridget Bush.

John was the father: Elizabeth, Martha, Phillip P., Mary, John Philip, Thomas, and Daniel. Most historians assume that all of the children with the exception of Elizabeth, Martha and Phillip P. were were Bridget's, but proof has not been established.

Unlike his father, John moved progressively west from Lancaster County. Following county court records, his migration took him to Peumensend Creek in Essex (now Caroline County; to Stafford (now Fairfax) near present-day Alexandria; then to Glady Run in Spotsylvania County; and finally to Garth Run near the Blue Ridge in Orange (now Madison) County.

John Bush passed in 1746.
